Immerse yourself in history and tradition with this intensive Aran knitting class. Marian was born in Bangor, County Down—a small seaside town on the wild and woolly coast of Ireland—where her bloodline has grown for 400 years, and where she still lives and knits. A Duffy by birth, Marian has knit since the age of 8, and taught herself to knit in the rich Aran tradition after the birth of her 1st child, making her Family Crest, the Lion, in an original Duffy family stitch called Honeycomb.
Aran is a traditional fisherman knit and a finished sweater is constructed of about 100,000 intricate stitches that echo Celtic artwork and carry the legacies of many generations of island clans. The naturally waterproof sweaters provide comfort and warmth from the harsh island weather, and patterns were handed down through family lines as sacred. The patterns were so unique to each family, that the sweaters were often used to identify the bodies of fishermen who perished at sea.
Venture into the past with Marian to learn this timeless technique and create a family heirloom of your own—all in the cozy warmth of Stitch Therapy, but close to our very own busy, history-rich shipping lanes of New York Harbor.
